Ground Preparations:

-Products used to prepare a surface for painting.
-Creates a barrier between the painting surface and subsequent layers of paint.

Gesso Primer:
  • Flexible acrylic ground with a high grit content.
  • Provides a stable white surface on which to paint.
  • May be used directly from the container for all over thick textural effects.

Liquid Gesso Primer:
  • Has a thinner consistency, which spreads more easily for a smoother painting surface.
  • Multiple layers will make the acrylic paint appear more vibrant.

Binder Medium: (I/F)
  • Is a Water based acrylic emulsion, which can be used straight from the bottle or thinned with water 1:1 to seal most surfaces.
  • Seals the surface and prevents absorption of paint into the fabric.
  • Can mix with paint to dilute colour without losing intensity.
  • Use between dry paint layers to seal or mix with paint for fast drying 'old' techniques.
  • Creates high gloss.

Mediums and Additives:

Unlocking Formula: (I/S)
 - For reworking a dried painting.
  • Allows new paint to be blended back in, existing paint edges to be feathered, or whole sections to be removed with a rag.
  •   Apply using a fine mist water sprayer, be sure to get one that delivers a fine mist of water and not a jet of heavy droplets. (Atelier sell them) - simply spray it on and rework as desired.

Fast Medium/Fixer: (I/F)
- For painting rapidly in layers which will dry fast and resilient.
  • Achieves quick paint progression.
  • Dilutes paint for fast layering, glazing, and thin paint techniques.
  • Reinforces a tender layer in preparation for scratch back or scraping techniques.
  • Can be used to seal a finished painting before applying varnish.  Note: Before using to seal a paint layer ensure that the paint is fully cured. (Usually takes around 30 days).

Slow Medium, Thick Slow Medium and Clear Painting Medium: (I/S)
- Slows drying time and allows touch dry paint to be reworked.
  • Extends wet-blending time.
  • Keeps thinly painted areas workable longer.
  • Allows for more time when working on large paintings.
  • Creates a smooth, mid-viscosity paint when added in small amounts.
  • Slow Medium: Dry paint which feels dry can be reactivated with water or unlocking formula the following day for re-blending techniques.
  • Thick Slow Medium: Can be used for spreading and diluting paint without making it thin or runny. Can also absorb more water than the 'slow medium' without becoming runny.
  • Clear Painting Medium: Useful for wet-over-dry techniques. Doesn't harden the paint.
-The mediums will remain active during a painting session when used with a water spray.

Impasto Gel: (I/F)
- Exaggerates structure and sharpens textural edges of the paint.
  • Thick, fast drying, water-based, acrylic gel.
  • Increases the gloss level of the paint.
  • Can be used as an adhesive to bond other materials to the painting.
  • Toughens and speeds up drying time.

Modelling Compound:
- Exaggerates structure
  • Very thick, textural paste used for exaggerated structure.
  • Used to create strong textural interest at any stage in a painting's process.
  • Dries white.
  • Can be mixed with paint to produce a coloured ground or painted over once dry.

Varnishes:
Final Varnishes are used for protection of the completed painting and to adjust the surface quality of the paint.
If your painting is too shiny or matte, you can correct the surface by choosing the appropriate varnish.

Chroma Solvent Finishing Varnishes:
  • Non-yellowing, self-leveling strippable varnishes.
  • Allow the painting to be cleaned more easily at a later date by swabbing with mineral turps.
  • Available in Satin, Gloss and Invisible.

Matte, Satin and Gloss Medium and Varnish:
  • Creamy mid-viscosity products made from hard acrylic emulsion.
  • Hardens the paint and cant be reworked later.
When used as a medium: Mix in to change the sheen levels of the acrylic paint or to dilute
for glazing. The paint will then be non-removable.
-You will also be able to add water.

When used as a varnish: Can be used as a varnish over acrylic paint.
To use as a varnish over a painting seal with 2 coats of Fast Medium/Fixer before varnishing.
They are non-removable, however they can be over painted.
-Don't add water- It becomes cloudy if you do.
